Abstract or Summary
Foreword Hiking enjoys great popularity in Switzerland among all age groups of the population and among tourists from Switzerland and abroad. In surveys, more than two-thirds of summer visitors and half of all winter visitors name hiking trails as an important aspect of what a tourist destination has to offer. An attractive, safe and uniformly signalized network of hiking trails is not only indispensable for tourism reasons. The comprehensive infrastructure is also important in terms of health policy, because it is virtually on everyone's doorstep and encourages exercise in the great outdoors. In addition, it contributes to the promotion of sustainable leisure traffic. The economic value of an attractive network of hiking trails should therefore not be underestimated. In Switzerland, the principles governing footpath and hiking trail networks are laid down by the federal government. It can also support and coordinate measures of the cantons for the construction and maintenance of such networks by providing technical advice and procuring basic information. In this sense, a new standard for the signalization of non-motorized traffic (SN 640 829a), which deals not only with hiking trails but also with bicycle, mountain bike and skating trails, came into force at the beginning of 2006. This binding standard harmonizes the design of signals for non-motorized traffic. In particular, the standard provides an additional possibility for the signalization of hiking routes with the route field. With this manual, the Federal Roads Office and the Swiss Hiking Routes would like to provide a practical aid to the cantonal offices and professional organizations as well as other persons entrusted with the signalization of hiking routes. The aim is to contribute to a uniform and customer-oriented signalization of hiking trails in Switzerland. The standard and this manual replace the "Guidelines for the Marking of Hiking Trails" from 1992. Federal Roads Office ASTRA Swiss Hiking Trails. (translated by DeepL Translator)
